Why Coast Gas

What you actually get.

Forty years of gasfitting

Our work is charged by the hour, so experience is worth something to you. A fault is usually diagnosed properly and quickly, rather than worked out on your clock.

Usually the boss on the job

More often than not it’s Grant, the owner, who answers the phone and then turns up to do the work. Either way you’re dealing with Coast Gas from the first call to the invoice.

If we don’t pick up, we’re on the tools

We don’t answer the phone while we are working on gas. It is not the moment to be distracted. Leave a message or send a WhatsApp and you will hear back, always within 24 hours on a weekday.

Send a photo before we come out

A photo of the appliance, the data plate or the fault often tells us what is wrong and what part to bring. Sometimes it saves the visit altogether. Send one on WhatsApp.

What we do

Both kinds of gas, in homes, businesses, boats and RVs.

LPG is the speciality and natural gas is everyday work, with forty years in the trade behind them. Mains or bottles, home, business, boat or RV, the work is the same standard either way.

01Natural gasMains gas hot water, cooking and heating. Installed, serviced and repaired.
02LPG regulators & linesAutomatic changeover regulators, pigtails and the lines that run from the bottles. A regulator losing pressure means appliances stop working properly.
03Hot waterGas water heaters repaired, serviced or replaced, and you are told why it failed rather than just handed a bill.
04CookingHobs and cooktops connected and checked, so it lights first time and burns the way it should.
05HeatingGas heaters serviced and repaired, and checked that they are burning clean before winter, not during it.
06LeaksFound, fixed and pressure tested, with the paperwork to show it was done properly.
07Safety checksThe whole installation gone over, with a Gas Safety Certificate at the end for your records or your insurer.
08CommercialKitchens, clubs and halls, and businesses running LPG plant such as spray booths. Certificates for your compliance file, and after hours work so trading is not interrupted.
09Boats & RVsCookers, fridges and cabin heaters. Bottle lockers, drainage and ventilation. The same gas work, in a much tighter space.

Boats & RVs

The work Coast Gas was built on.

Gas on a boat, a motorhome or a caravan is installed to the relevant codes, commissioned and tested rigorously, exactly as it is in a house.

Cookers, fridges and cabin heaters
Bottles, regulators and the lines that join it all up
Bottle lockers, drainage and ventilation
Pressure testing the whole system
Certificates for your insurer
Imported boats and caravans set up for another country

We come to you, whether it’s a boat or a van

Coast Gas attends on site: at the marina, at a storage yard, or at your home. Pine Harbour is a regular stop.

We recommend having the gas checked before you travel. A fault found at the campsite or on the water is a long way from help.

Carbon monoxide

The one worth knowing about.

Carbon monoxide is invisible and it has no smell. There is nothing to tip you off that anything is wrong.

The sign to watch for is people getting headaches or feeling off at home, and feeling better once they are out of the house. The same on a boat or in an RV.
If that sounds familiar, turn the gas appliances off and get them looked at. Don’t sit on it.
A carbon monoxide alarm is worth having. We supply and fit them, and can put one in while we’re on site.

Why a check finds it

Carbon monoxide comes from an appliance that is not burning clean, or where there is a lack of ventilation. Both show up in a gas safety check and neither is obvious from the outside.

Ventilation is the one most often found wanting on anything that has sat unused for a while.

Common questions

The things people ask before they ring.

How much does a gasfitter cost in Auckland?

Coast Gas charges $140 + GST per hour, with a minimum of $220 + GST that covers one hour of labour and the travel. Every rate is published on this page. Jobs under $1,000 are not quoted in writing, so the published rate is the answer.

Does gas work have to be done by a qualified gasfitter?

Yes. By law all gas work in New Zealand must be carried out by a licensed gasfitter and signed off by a certified gasfitter. You can check any gasfitter’s registration at pgdb.co.nz.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Do not use switches, appliances or anything with a flame. Open windows and doors. If you can safely reach it, turn the gas off at the bottle or the meter, then get everyone out. If you cannot turn the gas off, leave the building and call the Fire Service on 111 first. Then your gas supplier. A gasfitter comes after that.

What is a Gas Safety Certificate?

It is signed off by the certified gasfitter who is responsible for the work, and it records that the installation was safe to use at the time of connection. LPG work usually needs a Certificate of Compliance as well, so the two are issued together at $150 + GST. Insurers, landlords and buyers often ask to see one.

Do you work on boats and motorhomes?

Yes. Cookers, fridges, cabin heaters, bottles, regulators, lockers, ventilation and pressure testing, with a certificate at the end. Coast Gas travels to the boat or the van, at the marina, in a storage yard or on your own driveway.

Are you available after hours?

Yes, at a call-out fee of $300 + GST plus $250 + GST per hour, the first hour included. Standard hours are Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to midday. Anything outside those is after hours.

Why does nobody answer the phone sometimes?

Because we do not answer while working on gas. It is not the moment to be distracted. Leave a message or send a photo on WhatsApp and you will hear back within 24 hours on a weekday.
